The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a consumer warning for Protandim®, a dietary supplement, which may be contaminated with small metal particles.
Manufactured by LifeVantage Corporation, the supplement claims to fight oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a state characterized by an excess of free radical groups in the body that creates a potentially unstable cellular environment linked to tissue damage, accelerated aging and degenerative disease. Oxidative stress can result from many factors, including exposure to alcohol, medications, poor nutrition, trauma, cold, toxins and over-exercise.
The metal fragments were found in turmeric extract, an ingredient in the supplements. LifeVantage Corporation recalled specific Protandim® lot numbers.
Individuals taking Protandim® should report any negative side effects to their healthcare provider and FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.
