Catherine (Kate) Ulbricht, PharmD, MBA[c]
Dr. Ulbricht is co-founder of Natural Standard Research Collaboration. She serves as Senior Attending Pharmacist, Massachusetts General Hospital and Adjunct/Assistant Clinical Professor at multiple universities. She serves on the Editorial Board of Harvard Health Publications, Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association, Journal of Integrative Cancer Medicine, Pharmacy Practice News and many others. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy, indexed by Medline. Her background includes experience in the areas of quality improvement, healthcare informatics, regulatory affairs, clinical trial protocol analysis and drug therapy decision-support. Dr. Ulbricht has also been trained in physical therapy and chiropractic care. Among her many international publications, many have been translated into multiple languages including German, Japanese and Spanish.

Ethan Basch, MD, MSc, MPhil
Dr. Basch received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, internal medicine training at Massachusetts General Hospital, medical oncology fellowship at Memorial-Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, M.Sc. in Clinical Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, and graduate degree in literature from Oxford University. He has held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Northeastern University, University of Rhode Island, University of Missouri, and is currently on the faculty at Cornell University and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the Departments of Medicine and Biostatistics. His background in clinical informatics, symptom management, and decision-support includes the design of clinical effectiveness and quality improvement programs for healthcare systems. He serves on the editorial board of Harvard Health Publications, the publishing arm of Harvard Medical School, as well as multiple CAM peer-reviewed publications including the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy, Journal of Cancer Integrative Medicine, Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology, Alternative Medicine Research Report, and Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association. Glen F. Aukerman, MD
Glen F. Aukerman, MD is a tenured Professor of Family Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University and Medical Director for the University’s Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Aukerman has served as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Ohio State and at West Virginia University. In addition to his extensive teaching, research, and clinical experience, he has an impressive record of state and national leadership experience. Dr. Aukerman is the Past President of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians. He is also a past Scholar in Residence of the Bureau of Health Professions and Deputy Director of the Division of Quality Assurance in Bureau of Health Professions in the Health Resources Services Administration in Washington, D.C. Dr. Aukerman is board certified in holistic medicine, family practice, managed care and healthcare quality management. Jason Barker, ND
Dr. Barker holds a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science with a minor in Anatomy & Neurobiology. He is one of a handful of NDs to have completed 2 years of a post-graduate family practice residency in the Family Practice Residency Program at National College of Natural Medicine. Dr. Barker has written numerous articles for several natural medicine journals and is the co-author of the book “Herbs and Nutrients for the Mind: A Guide to Natural Brain Enhancers” and lectures internationally as an expert in nutraceutical applications in medicine. In addition to maintaining a private practice, Dr. Barker serves as a consultant to the nutraceutical and sports medicine industries and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Clinical Research at Oregon Health & Science University; he is actively engaged in clinical research with a focus on nutraceutical agents and human performance.

Ernie-Paul Barrette, MD, FACP
Dr. Barrette received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, his MA from Harvard University in Organic Chemistry, and conducted his Internal Medicine training at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). He has served as an attending physician and Assistant Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, at Massachusetts General Hospital, and is currently on faculty at MetroHealth Medical Center (Ohio) and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is an expert in complementary and alternative therapies, has contributed to multiple textbooks, and serves as an author and Editorial Advisor for the newsletter Alternative Medicine Alert.

Brent A. Bauer, MD
Dr. Bauer is the Director of the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and serves as Associate Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and an author of over 40 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters. He is also a co-editor of The Textbook of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2006). He is currently a principal or co-investigator on a number of herbal studies at Mayo Clinic, (e.g. evaluation of ginkgo for prevention of chemo brain, American ginseng as a treatment for cancer related fatigue). Dr. Bauer lectures nationally and internationally on topics related to Integrative Medicine, with a special emphasis on dietary supplements.

William Benda, MD, FACEP, FAAEM
Dr. Benda received his professional training at Duke University, University of Miami School of Medicine, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil. He has served as Director of Emergency Medical Services and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA, as the sole physician in Eastern Rwanda during the 1994 genocide and subsequent cholera epidemic, and as medical director of the Big Sur Health Center. His research and clinical work has focused on patients with breast cancer, animal-assisted therapy, and physician health and well-being. Dr. Benda is a co-founder of the National Integrative Medicine Council, a non-profit organization for which he has served as Director of Medical and Public Affairs. He is an editor, contributor, and medical advisory board member for several conventional and alternative medicine journals, and lectures extensively on a variety of topics in the integrative arena.

Deena Beneda-Khosh, ND
Dr. Beneda-Khosh received her naturopathic medical degree from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington. She is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. She is currently serving as the secretary and treasurer of the Kansas Naturopathic Association. Dr. Khosh has published several articles which appear in various alternative medical journals. She currently practices naturopathic medicine. In addition, she is a Research Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the School of Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center in the Program of Integrative Medicine. Dr. Khosh is very active within her academic community as a guest lecturer on various complementary and alternative therapies.

Samuel D. Benjamin, MD, MD (H)
Dr. Benjamin received his medical degree from the State University of Guadalajara, Mexico and later an MD awarded by the State University of New York. He is a licensed homeopath and certified acupuncturist. He completed his residency in Pediatrics and Social Medicine from Montefiore Hospital part of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He served as Medical Director for the Western Hemispshere Region of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. He developed the Arizona Center for Health in Medicine for Catholic Healthcare West, served as Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at State University of New York Stony Brook.

Stephen Bent, MD
Graduate of Duke University and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in General Internal Medicine/Clinical Epidemiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Bent is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and attending physician at UCSF where he conducts research evaluating the safety and effectiveness of alternative therapies. He is the project director of an NIH-funded, randomized controlled trial of the herb saw palmetto, and the principal investigator of a study evaluating a commonly used Chinese herbal remedy. Dr. Bent is co-author of textbooks in evidence-based medicine and internal medicine, and he is an expert in the systematic evaluation of alternative therapies.

Lee S. Berk, DrPH, MPH, FACSM, CHES, CLS
Dr. Lee S. Berk is a pioneer medical researcher studying positive eustress lifestyle behaviors such as humor/laughter, exercise, music, perception and spirituality & religion and their effects on neuroendocrine (stress hormones) and the immune system bidirectional communications since the early 1980’s. His research examines positive emotions and their biochemical/physiological effects in the field of psychoneuroimmunology (brain/behavior/stress hormone/immune system interactions). He is currently is Associate Professor of Health Promotion and Education, School of Public Health and Associate Research Professor of Pathology and Human Anatomy, School of Medicine, Loma Linda University. Previously he was Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, College of Medicine in the Susan Samueli Center for Complimentary and Alternative & Integrative Medicine at the University of California Irvine. Timothy C. Birdsall, N.D.
Dr. Birdsall is Vice-President, Integrative Medicine for Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) and a member of the Department of Naturopathic Medicine at Midwestern Regional Medical Center, the flagship hospital for CTCA, where he has helped pioneer an innovative, interdisciplinary, team-based approach to cancer care since 1998. A well-known lecturer and practitioner of naturopathic medicine, Dr. Birdsall is a popular presenter at medical conferences worldwide. He graduated from Bastyr University in Seattle in 1985, where he served on the faculty for five years. Dr. Birdsall is active in numerous professional including, including the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), where he has served as a member of the board of directors, Speaker of the House of Delegates and Vice President. He is currently Vice President of the Oncology Academy of Naturopathic Physicians. In 2000, he was the recipient of the President's Award of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Dr. Birdsall is the co-author of the book How To Prevent and Treat Cancer With Natural Medicine (2002, Riverhead Books).

Reid B. Blackwelder, MD
Reid B. Blackwelder, M.D. is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at East Tennessee State University. In addition, he has been the Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency in Kingsport for over 10 years. Dr. Blackwelder is also active in the politics of medicine, serving at multiple levels within the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians, including President. He is currently a delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians Congress of Delegates, and chairs the AAFP Commission on Continuing Professional Development. He has numerous teaching awards at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine. One of his main interests is on patient centered medicine and Integrative medicine. He is a member of the American Herbalists Guild, and lectures extensively on a number of topics of Integrative medicine. He routinely lectures nationally on these topics, and challenges medical students, residents, and family physicians to actively practice Mind-Body medicine, mainly in the form of good communication and compassionate bedside manner.

Heather Boon, BScPhm, PhD
As an author and researcher, Dr. Boon has gained an international reputation, evidenced by her membership on the prestigious International Editorial Board of the British journal, Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies (FACT). She founded and Chairs the Toronto CAM Research Network, and as an advisor to multiple government and private organizations. In addition, she chaired the Canadian Society for Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP) Task Force to Develop Guidelines for Handling Alternative Medication/Therapy. Dr. Boon has been Principal Investigator for myriad large studies focusing on CAM therapies used to treat cancer and on emerging CAM practice patterns. She is widely published as the author of primary research and reviews, and maintains a faculty position at the University of Toronto.

Thomas Brendler
Thomas Brendler is an ethnobotanist, consultant and translator primarily for the pharmaceutical sector. In this capacity he has developed various strategic presentations on the use of plants in food and medicine, and information systems and marketing tools on herbal medicines for various German manufacturers. He has been editor and author of Herb-CDR, a digital encyclopaedia of medicinal plants, since 1996 (5th edition 2003). Since 1998 he is author of the "Physician's Desk Reference for Herbal Medicines" (3rd edition 2004), "Plant-based Ingredients for Functional Foods" (2002), "Handbuch Phytotherapie" (2003) and "Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of Indian Ocean Islands" (2004). In 1997 he founded PlantaPhileR, a consultancy and image archive focussing on the identification and data collection of medicinal plants and their uses in traditional medicines and the protection of biodiversity. He has made various field trips to ethnopharmacologically relevant regions of the world, especially Africa and Pacific islands. He worked on the translation into English of the German Commission E monographs on medicinal plants, and co-produces and maintains PhytoDokR, a reference database for publications on medicinal plants.

Stefan Bughi, MD
Dr. Bughi is President of the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Stress. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, and serves as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Presently he works as a physician specialist in the Endocrine/Diabetes Service at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, and at the University of Southern California. Dr. Bughi received his medical degree from the University of Bucharest School of Medicine, Romania, Internal Medicine training at NE Pennsylvania Affiliated Programs, and Endocrinology Fellowship at the University of Southern California. His research interests include stress and psychosomatic disorders. He has organized and presented seminars on stress to health professionals and at national and international scientific meetings.

Mark S. Chambers, DMD, MS
Dr. Chambers is an internationally recognized oral oncologist and clinical investigator with a focus on developing novel therapeutic approaches to the oral sequelae of cancer therapy. He is the Director of Advanced Education programs in the Section of Oral Oncology, Department of Head and Neck Surgery at MDACC. Dr. Chambers is an Associate Professor of Head and Neck Surgery with a secondary appointment in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He serves on the Texas Cancer Council setting standards and treatment paradigms for management and prevention of the oral morbidity of cancer therapy. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics, Steering Committee on Mucositis in the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer, and on multiple editorial boards of oncologic journals. His research efforts have included the conduct of several novel clinical trials evaluating secretogogue.

Theresa Charrois, BScPharm, MSc
Theresa Charrois is a licensed pharmacist and clinical epidemiologist. She is currently a research associate with the CARE (Complementary and Alternative Research and Education) program, University of Alberta. She graduated from the University of Alberta Faculty of Pharmacy followed by completion of a clinical pharmacy residency program with Capital Health Authority (Edmonton, Alberta). She then completed her Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Alberta. She has an extensive clinical background working as a pharmacist in internal medicine. Her research interests include community-based research, pharmacy interventions and safety of natural health products. She is also involved in developing natural health product curricula for undergraduate medical education.

Richard Philip Cohan, DDS, MS, MBA
After Dr. Cohan received an AB in bacteriology from University of California, Berkeley, he engaged in molecular genetic research at Stanford Medical School and Syntex Laboratories. Subsequently, he completed a Master’s degree in (oral) biology at Southern Methodist University and a DDS at Case Western Reserve University. He joined the faculty of the School of Dentistry, University of the Pacific (UOP) in San Francisco in 1972 and became Section Head of Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Planning in 1984. Dr. Cohan has attained both a Master’s degree in educational psychology and an MBA from UOP during his tenure there. Since 1989, his research, new course development, publishing, editing, and consulting activities have focused primarily on integrative medicine in dentistry. Most recently, he co-authored and submitted for publication a chapter on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the leading dental pharmacology textbook. He maintains a private dental practice at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

William Collinge, MPH, PhD
Dr. Collinge received his MPH and PhD from UC Berkeley, and clinical training at Harvard's Mind/Body Medical Institute. He has served as a peer review panelist at the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), and has taught at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and several other universities. He has conducted research in integrative programs for cancer, HIV, and chronic fatigue syndrome, and has extensive clinical background in behavioral, mind/body, and energy medicine. He consults in patient-centered approaches to program development in integrative medicine. He is on the editorial boards of Subtle Energies & Energy Medicine and The International Journal of Healing and Caring. His books include Subtle Energy and The American Holistic Health Association Complete Guide to Alternative Medicine.

Julie Conquer, BSc, MSc, PhD
Dr. Conquer received her BSc in Biology at the University of Waterloo, her MSc in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph and her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Pathology at the University of Toronto. From 1999-2003, Dr. Conquer was the Director of the Human Nutraceutical Research Unit and the Natural Health Products Technology Cluster, at the University of Guelph. Dr. Conquer then accepted the position of Director of Clinical Research with KGK Synergize Inc. Presently, she is an adjunct professor at the University of Guelph in the department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, and president of RGB Consulting. Dr. Conquer is the author of approximately 25 peer-reviewed publications and numerous abstracts, in the area of nutraceuticals and disease. She has also written 7 invited reviews and book chapters.

B.H. Cook, MD, PhD
B.H. Cook, MD, PhD is currently a practicing community mental health center psychiatrist. He holds a PhD in medical physiology and biophysics from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He has published a number of articles dealing with the correlation of physiology and histochemistry. He completed medical school at the University of Mississippi in 1976. After finishing medical school he studied pathology at the Medical College of Georgia. He was a senior research officer at the Prince of Wales hospital in Randwick, NSW, Australia (a teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales in the division of pediatric pathology). He was a senior lecturer in medical physiology at the National University of Singapore School of Medicine. He is a diplomate in herbal medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Integrative Medicine.

Cathi Dennehy, PharmD
Dr. Dennehy is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Her areas of specialty are herbal medicine and anticoagulation. Dr. Dennehy co-coordinates an evidence-based course in herbal remedies and dietary supplements at UCSF. She has co-authored book chapters on Herbs and Dietary Supplements in various medical and pharmacy textbooks. Dr. Dennehy serves as a consultant to various organizations and journal publications in the area of herbal medicine. In addition, she has coordinated various continuing education programs for state and national pharmacy societies on herbs and dietary supplements and speaks statewide and nationally on this subject.

J. Donald Dishman, DC, MSc
Dr. Dishman is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Anatomy and Research at the New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) in Seneca Falls, N.Y. He serves as Director of the Chiropractic Clinic of Monroe Community Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. In addition to his DC, he was awarded a Master of Science degree in Neurophysiology from the Institute for Sensory Research at Syracuse University. His research has focused on the neurophysiology of spinal manipulative therapy. He maintains a full-time research laboratory at NYCC in which neurophysiological techniques (e.g., H-reflexes, transcranial magnetic stimulation, electromyography) are employed in the investigation of the effects of spinal manipulation on the nervous system. Dr. Dishman also maintains an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor of Bioengineering and Neuroscience at the Institute for Sensory Research of Syracuse University. He has published numerous manuscripts in the field of neurophysiology of spinal manipulation, including in the international journal, Spine. He also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics and Journal of the Neuromusculoskeletal System.

John Douillard, PhD
Dr. John Douillard is the author of The 3-Season Diet and Body, Mind, and Sport, which has sold over 60,000 copies and has been printed in six languages. His book Perfect Health for Kids, was released early last year, followed by The Encyclopedia of Ayurvedic Massage (both © 2004, North Atlantic Books). John received his Ayurvedic training in India and holds a Ph.D. in Ayurvedic medicine from the Open International University. He is the former Director of Player Development for the New Jersey Nets in the NBA. He co-directed Deepak Chopra’s Ayurvedic center for eight years and has trained over 2000 Western doctors in Ayurvedic medicine. He launched a preservative-free Ayurvedic skin care line in 1998, and an Ayurvedic herbal line for health professionals in 2003. He has been teaching Ayurvedic medicine, natural health, fitness, and nutrition internationally for seventeen years. Currently he directs the LifeSpa School of Ayurveda and practices Ayurvedic and chiropractic medicine at the LifeSpa in Boulder, Colorado, where he lives with his wife and six children.

Sarah Elsabagh, BSc, PhD
Dr. Elsabagh obtained her doctorate degree from the School of Pharmacy, University of London. Her research interests focus on the effects of nutraceuticals on cognitive function. She has numerous publications and experience in peer reviewing articles within this field. In addition, she has presented her work at national and international conferences. She is currently undertaking her medical degree at King’s College, University of London.

Joan Engebretson, DrPH, RN
Dr. Engebretson is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Nursing and the School of Public Health. Her background is in maternal child health and community health. She has taught in maternal child, women’s health and community health. She is co-editor of the Maternal, Neonatal and Women’s Health Nursing textbook. Dr. Engebretson has conducted and supervised ethnographic studies examining cultural issues and approaches to healing, as well as clinical research with traditional healers and recipients of touch therapies. She has published numerous articles and book chapters on complementary and alternative therapies, serves on several advisory boards, and consults with many organizations regarding the use of complementary therapies. She teaches a course on culture and complementary therapies at the University of Texas.

Edzard Ernst, MD, PhD, FRCP
Dr. Ernst is one of the best-known worldwide figures in complementary and alternative medicine research, and he has published over 500 major articles and books in this area. His work has focused on the systematic production of rigorous and trustworthy information. He is currently Director of the Department of Complementary Medicine at Peninsula Medical School, Universities of Exeter & Plymouth in England, which is a premier global center for scientific research in this field.

Mitchell A. Fleisher, MD, DHt, FAAFP, DcABCT
Dr. Fleisher is a board-certified family physician specializing in classical homeopathy, nutritional and botanical medicine and chelation therapy with over twenty years of clinical experience in integrative medicine. He serves as an active member of the clinical faculty of the National Center for Homeopathy, and Clinical Instructor for the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center and at the Medical College of Virginia, where he teaches homeopathy in the complementary medicine program. He has lectured throughout the U.S. and internationally on classical homeopathy and nutritional therapy, and regularly contributes as an author and editor to medical journals and popular magazines. Harley Goldberg, DO
Dr. Goldberg is the Director of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Kaiser Permanente Northern California Medical Care Program, and the Chief of Complementary Medicine at Santa Teresa Medical Center in San Jose, CA. A graduate of the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, he completed a Family Medicine Residency at Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland OR. Joerg Gruenwald, PhD

Ruoling Guo, BSc MSc PhD
Ruoling Guo qualified as a pharmacist in China, after gaining her BSc in pharmacy and MSc in drug delivery from West China University of Medical Sciences. She then worked in the United Kingdom as a visiting pharmacist to establish a pharmacy of Chinese herbal medicine for International Health Limited. Ruoling later trained as an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist and became a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), and a member of the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ATCM). She has since taken a number of roles in the traditional Chinese medicine industry in UK, including chief manager of a large chain company, Herbmedic. After completing her PhD in medicinal chemistry, Ruoling joined the Department of Complementary Medicine at Peninsula Medical School, Universities of Exeter & Plymouth in England, as a research fellow. Her current research interest is in the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines in the treatment of chronic diseases. William R. Hamilton, PharmD
William Hamilton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Sciences at Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. After graduation from the University of California at San Francisco, Dr. Hamilton practiced as a hospital and community pharmacist until joining the faculty at Creighton in 1993. An interest in complementary or alternative approaches to chronic health problems has served as a guide to integrating dietary supplements into the Nonprescription Therapeutics course and teaching an elective course titled “Alternative Medicine Therapeutics”. Donna Hebbeler, MPH, DrPH
Dr. Hebbeler, a 35-year resident, health care provider, and sole DrPH in preventive care in Alaska, has delivered clinical services in rural and urban Alaska, and lived in Tlingit, Aleut, Inupiat and Yupik communities. Being a pilot and flying throughout the state her professional contacts are extensive and her knowledge of Alaska's unique health care delivery system is comprehensive. Her education includes: a Family Nurse Practitioner Certification from Wichita State University in 1975, an MPH in Health Education and Promotion and a DrPH in Preventive Care in 2005 from Loma Linda University. While at Loma Linda, she provided women's health care and prevention services in Fiji, Guam and Mexico. Her research is in intimate partner violence and primary prevention of fetal alcohol exposure by increased contraceptive use in women who use alcohol. She is currently Program Director of the Community Wellness Advocate Program and Assistant Professor of Health Sciences at the University of Alaska Southeast, Sitka Campus, and is establishing a business incorporating integrative medicine, a new specialty in Alaska.

Evelyn Hermes-DeSantis, PharmD, BCPS
Evelyn Hermes-DeSantis, PharmD, BCPS, is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey and is the Director of Drug Information Services at Robert Johnson University Hospital. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rutgers University. After completing a Specialized Residency in Drug Information Practice at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, she practiced at the Drug Information Center at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Hermes-DeSantis returned to the East Coast in 1995 to assume a faculty position at Rutgers. She is also a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist. Dr. Hermes-DeSantis has published numerous articles and a book chapter, and lectures in a variety of areas including: cardiology, gastrointestinal related disorders, glaucoma, drug-induced diseases and medication errors, dietary supplements, patient counseling, and a variety of other topics. In addition to these areas, her research focuses in the area of provision of drug information services and the relationship between hospital and industrial pharmacy practice.

Kevin Hoehn, BS, PharmD, MBA, CGP
Kevin Hoehn is the Pharmacy Clinical Coordinator at Faxton-St. Lukes Healthcare in Utica, NY. He has an extensive clinical background working as a hospital pharmacist for almost thirty years. Charles Holmes, MD, MPH
Dr. Holmes trained in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and is presently a Fellow in Infectious Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women's Hospital and a Clinical Fellow at Harvard Medical School. Following a graduate degree in Epidemiology and International Health from the University of Michigan, Dr. Holmes practiced infectious disease epidemiology at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Benjamin Kligler, MD, MPH

Former Research Director of the Duke University Center for Integrative Medicine, Dr. Kroll is nationally recognized for his work in alternative medicine education and research. He was recently named a President's Teaching Scholar of the University of Colorado. Vasant Lad, MASc
Dr. Lad is an Ayurvedic Physician and Executive Director Ayurvedic Institute who brings a wealth of classroom and practical experience to the United States. Brian Lawenda, MD
Dr. Lawenda is a Board Certified Radiation Oncologist and currently the Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. Dr. Lawenda is also an Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences at Uniformed University of the Health Sciences (Bethesda, MD), and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Indiana University School of Medicine (Indianapolis, IN). In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, where he also lectures and graduate students on acupuncture research methods. Dana J. Lawrence, DC
Dr. Lawrence is an associate professor in the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research. He is also past-editor for several professional scientific journals for the chiropractic profession, including the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (for many years the sole journal in the chiropractic profession to be indexed in Index Medicus and Current Contents/Clinical Medicine, along with other international databases), Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, Journal of Chiropractic Humanities, and the Journal of Sports Chiropractic and Rehabilitation; he is in the process of developing a new journal, Best Practices in Complementary and Alternative Health Care. Zhongxing Liao, MD
Dr. Liao is an Associate Professor at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in the Department of Radiation Oncology, Houston, Texas. She received her M.D. degree from Hunan Medical University People's Republic of China in 1982. She did her residency training at Hunan Tumor Hospital & Institution, in 1983 –1989, and her post doctorate training in the Experimental Radiation Oncology in the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Houston, TX from 1989 – 1994. From there she went to The Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education, The University of Kansas School of Medicine, Wichita, KS for internal medicine internship in 1994-1995. Returning back to the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center to finishing up her residency in radiation Oncology in 1995-1999. She was American Board of Radiology (Radiation Oncology) certified in 1999. Dr. Liao Joined The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center as an Assistant Professor in 1999, and associate professor in 2004. In 2002 Dr. Liao became the Clinical Section Chief of the Thoracic Radiation Oncology, Department of Radiation Oncology, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. She has given multiple lectures and presentations nationally and internationally. Dr. Liao is also interested in research in Integrative Oncology, especially traditional Chinese Medicine. She has been actively involved in the international center for integrative medicine, and translational research using Chinese herb in the treatment and prevention of lung cancer. Richard Liebowitz, MD
Richard S. Liebowitz MD is Vice President Medical Affairs of New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In this role he is responsible for the credentialing and privileging of its medical staff through the Medical Staff Office, and serves as a Hospital representative to the governing Medical Board. He is also the Designated Institution Official, responsible for all aspects of graduate medical education at the Hospital. Dr. Liebowitz joined the Hospital's management team in 2006. Previously, he was the Medical Director for Business Development and Strategic Planning at the Duke University Health System, as well as the Section Chief of General Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Yanze Liu, PhD
Dr. Yanze Liu Graduated from the Department of Chinese Materia Medica, Henan College o Traditional Chinese Medicine, Zhengzhou, China and received his Ph. D. degree of Organic Chemistry from Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China. He had one-year visiting research at the Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Science, Beijing, China. Dr. Liu was a visiting scholar at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan from 1988 to 1992, focused on the isolation and structure determination of tannin and polyphenols from herbal medicine. Dr. Liu was promoted to associate professor (1991) and full professor (1995) in Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr. Liu served as associate director and director in the Department of Organic and Natural Product Chemistry since 1992. In 1999 Dr. Liu came to the Department of Chemistry, The Pennsylvania State University for his visiting research and then transferred to current position, Bio-organic and Natural Product Lab, McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He was prompted to the instructor in 2004. Dr. Liu as a principle investigator took charge of three national projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China since 1991, one Key Project of National Scientific Research of 9th Five-Year Plan and one Project of Henan Provincial Foundation for Excellent Young Scientist. Dr. Liu was a peer-reviewer of National Natural Science Foundation of China, thesis of graduate students of Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, government fund, and scientific achievements. Dr. Liu is a board member of Chinese Traditional and Herbal Drugs, a prestigious journal in the area of herbal medicine research of China, since 1998 and a guest speaker of New England School of Acupuncture. Dr. Liu received a dozen of awards and honorary titles including Award of Scientific and Technology of Young Pharmacologist by Chinese Pharmaceutical Society and Excellent Young Scientist of Henan Province given by Henan provincial government. Dr. Liu published more than 60 papers on national and international journals; invented 2 patented research instruments, 3 licensed new herbal medicines and health products. Ann M. Lynch, RPh, AE-C
Ann Lynch serves as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS). She received her BS in pharmacy from Northeastern University and graduate level training at MCPHS. Her professional focus is in the area of herbal medicine and interactions, as well as in community practice with specialty interests in asthma, diabetes, and women’s health. Ms. Lynch coordinates on-site screenings and community educational clinics regarding conventional and complementary medicine practices at Fallon Clinic Pharmacies, and co- coordinates courses in drug interactions and pharmaceutical care at MCPHS.

John S. Markowitz, Pharm.D.
Dr. Markowitz is an Associate Professor with tenure within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Markowitz earned his BS in biology at Memphis State University in Memphis, Tennessee, and his PharmD at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, also in Memphis. After graduating, he completed his residency in psychiatric pharmacy at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. He was later board certified in psychiatric pharmacy practice. Dr. Markowitz’s research interests include botanical-drug interactions, drug-drug interactions, the role to metabolic enzymes and drug transporters in therapeutic response, and pharmacogenetics. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers on these and related topics in journals such as Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, JAMA, Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, Drug Metabolism and Disposition, and Neuropsychopharmacology. He is presently funded by the National Institutes of Health by NICHD, NCCAM and the Office of Dietary Supplements. He is a member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists, and American College of Clinical Pharmacology. Dr. Markowitz is a frequent scientific reviewer for grant applications submitted to NCCAM.

Danik M Martirosyan, PhD
Dr. Danik Martirosyan is the founder of the Functional Foods Center at D&A Inc. He is the Chairman of the Annual International Conferences in the series entitled "Functional Foods for the Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Diseases". He is also the editor of four books in the series Functional Foods for Chronic Diseases, and has created a global network of scientists and functional food experts in an environment conductive to innovative research collaboration. Furthermore, he is an Academician of the International Academy of Scientific Discoveries and Inventions and Honorary Associate Professor at the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences at Texas Woman's University as well as a member of the Editorial Group for the Lipids in Health and Diseases. Sonia Elisa Masocco
Sonia is faculty at the Ayurvedic Institute who teaches sessions of Level 1 Lifestyles and Integrated Lab, Level 2 Ayurvedic Herbology and sessions of Level 2 Assessment and Management and Integrated Lab. She also conducts the Ayurvedic Beauty Concepts and the Aromatherapy and Ayurveda workshops here at the Ayurvedic Institute. She is an ITEC qualified practitioner in Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Massage Therapy, she has continued with study and practice in Clinical Aromatherapy and Herbology. She completed the Ayurvedic Studies Program and has participated in the Gurukula program in Pune India. Jörg Melzer, MD
Dr. Melzer is a graduate of the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University Frankfurt (medical faculty) with postgraduate training in internal medicine and complementary medicine (i.e. naturopathy, phytotherapy). He currently runs the naturopathic and complementary consultation of the Institute of Complementary Medicine at the University Hospital Zurich (Head: Prof. Dr. R. Saller). His research and clinical work is focused on herbal medicine (phytotherapy). Jennifer Minigh, PhD
Jennifer Minigh, PhD is the Director of Medical Communication Consultants. She obtained her doctorate in Biomedical Science from Marshall University School of Medicine. Upon graduation, Dr. Minigh held two consecutive postdoctoral positions studying genetic deafness and melanoma, respectively. Her research has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and has been presented at various national and international conferences. She has more than 10 years of research, writing, and teaching experience in the areas of pharmacology, toxicology, molecular genetics, signal transduction, cardiology, and oncology. Susan A Nyanzi, DrPH, MPH, CHES, ACSM
As a Chronic Disease Management Specialist, Dr. Nyanzi provides integrated lifestyle counseling in nutrition, physical activity, stress and addictive behaviors for the prevention and management of chronic degenerative disorders. She has counseled patients and designed interventions on lifestyle modification at: a Diabetes Treatment Center, a Veterans Medical Center, a Rheumatology clinic and currently in her private practice. Carolyn Williams Orlando, MA, PhD candidate
Carolyn Williams Orlando is a holistic health counselor and integrative medicine consultant for Mountain Voice Health in Boulder Colorado. Carolyn received her undergraduate degree in molecular biology from the University of Wisconsin, MA in virology from Harvard Medical School, and PhD in psychology and integrative healthcare from Saybrook. Carolyn traveled to the southern Mediterranean and South America observing health and healing in other cultures. Carolyn gave birth to both of her children at home with a midwife. Carolyn served as community faculty at Prescott College and Yavapai College in Arizona. Steven G. Ottariano, BS Pharm, RPh
As a practicing clinical pharmacist for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Manchester, New Hampshire, Steve Ottariano is able to see the benefits of combining the use of what we call “traditional” pharmacy with the complementary potential that exists in medicinal plants. He counsels patients on how to integrate plant and nutrient therapy with their existing medications. He is the author of Medicinal Herbal Therapy: A Pharmacist’s Viewpoint © 1999, and an accomplished lecturer. He is an editorial advisor for Lippincott Publishers, Pharmacology instructor for the LPN course at Health Career Training Associates, frequent guest on the nationally syndicated Frankie Boyer Health Radio Hour, and a board member appointed to study complementary medicine nationally in the Veterans Administration. He is also a certified martial arts instructor holding Black belts in two traditional styles of Karate (Shorin-ryu and Goju-ryu).

Todd D. Porter, PhD
Dr. Porter is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Kentucky, Lexington. He received his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Illinois and was a postdoctoral fellow at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Porter has published peer-reviewed research on the biochemistry of the cytochrome P450 system, and more recently has focused on the post-translational regulation of cholesterol synthesis and the mechanism by which botanicals, including garlic, tea, and policosanol, inhibit cholesterol synthesis. Dr. Porter has received funding for these studies from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the American Heart Association, as well as the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer’s Association. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology and is a peer reviewer for the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health.

Pamela Hemrajani Ramer, DC, PhD[c]
Dr. Hemrajani-Ramer has a broad interest in combining many alternative (Western as well as Eastern) approaches to human health. She is also trained as a scientist dedicated to research into the many existing alternative health modalities, their changing role in modern society, and the possible development of new approaches. A Ph.D. Candidate from one of the world's leading research universities (the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor), she is also a member of the Amercian Chiropractic Association, American Association of Pain Management, the National Osteoporosis Foundation and has a special certificate from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. Dr. Hemrajani-Ramer has published articles on alternative health and is very active within her community as a guest lecturer on various complementary and alternative therapies. She currently practices in Santa Monica, California. John Redwanski, PharmD
Dr. Redwanski is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Hampton University School of Pharmacy. He also serves as the Director of Drug Information for Hampton University. Dr. Redwanski received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University and completed a specialized residency in drug information practice at Nova Southeastern University located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is the primary coordinator for the drug information courses and serves as a preceptor in drug information for PharmD candidates in the advanced experiential program. Along with being a lecturer for the state pharmacy organizations, Dr. Redwanski is the faculty liaison for American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Adrianne Rogers, MD
Dr. Rogers received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and pathology training at the Mallory Institute of Pathology (Boston City Hospital) and the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. She is Professor and Associate Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Director of the Office of Medical Education at Boston University School of Medicine and is on the pathology staff at Boston Medical Center. She is the author of numerous articles on experimental studies of dietary and nutritional effects on chemical carcinogenesis, is a Diplomate and member of the American Board of Toxicology, on which she just completed a term as Chair of the examination committee, and is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, Toxicology and Nutrition and Cancer. She is a member of the Expert Panel of the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) that reviews publications and data related to safety of materials used in fragrances and of the Beryllium Industries Scientific Advisory Committee (BISAC) that reviews basic science and clinical studies of beryllium toxicity. For many years she served on and chaired the grants review panel for the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) which supports research in diet and cancer.

Aviva Romm, BSc, RH (AHG), CPM
Aviva Romm has been in clinical practice as an herbalist and midwife since 1986. She is currently President of the American Herbalists Guild (AHG). The author of six books on botanical medicine, Aviva is also the Executive Editor of the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Herbalists Guild. She serves as primary editor for the Textbook of Botanical Medicine for Women, to be published by Churchill/Elsevier in 2004. Her policy work has focused on developing national standards for botanical medicine education and practice in the United States. She regularly writes for national health magazines and peer reviewed publications, is on the advisory board for Bastyr University’s Bachelor of Science in Botanical Medicine, and regularly presents at national conferences.

Anthony L Rosner, PhD, LLD [Hon.]
Anthony Rosner was Director of Research and Education at FCER for the past 15 years. After obtaining his PhD in Medical Sciences at Harvard in 1972 and conducting postdoctoral research at the NIH in Bethesda and at the CNRS in Gif-sur-Yvette, France, in 1973 and 1974, he directed research and clinical chemistry laboratories at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital, then taught chemistry and served as Department Administrator in Chemistry at Brandeis University and managed reseach operations in neonatology at Children's Hospital in Boston until he joined FCER in 1992. He chaired one of six charter committees at the inception of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 1992 and has served on the editorial board of three peer-reviewed journals. He is the recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the American Chiropractic Association in 2000 as well as of an honorary degree from the National University of Health Sciences in 2002. He has recently become Director of Research Initiatives at the Parker College of Chiropractic, maintaining his office in Brookline, MA.

Michael Rotblatt, MD, PharmD
Dr. Rotblatt is an Associate Professor of Medicine at UCLA, and is the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency at the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. He received his MD from UC Irvine and completed residency training at the UCLA-San Fernando Valley program. Prior to medical school Dr. Rotblatt began his career as a pharmacist, receiving his PharmD from UC San Francisco, and worked as a drug information and clinical pharmacist at Stanford University Hospital. His area of interest is evaluating herbal medicines and other dietary supplements and educating health care professionals in this field. He is co-author of the book, Evidence-Based Herbal Medicine, has lectured nationally to health professional groups, and serves on the Editorial Board for Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies (FACT).

Andrew L. Rubman, ND
Dr. Rubman received his naturopathic medical degree from National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. A founder and lifetime member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, he has been active in national media and organizations advocating the evolution of a responsible medical continuum among all licensed physicians. He has served as an advisor and lecturer for the White House Commission for Complementary and Alternative Medical Policy and medical schools across the United States. An Adjunct Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the College of Naturopathic Medicine, University of Bridgeport, and an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the Florida College of Integrative Medicine, he is widely published. Dr. Rubman serves as the content provider in Naturopathic Medicine for the North American Menopause Society, and is an editorial advisor to numerous publications.

Nancy C. Russell, DrPH (retired)
Nancy Russell served as a Senior Health Education Specialist with the Integrative Medicine Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health with concentrations in cancer biology, nutrition and epidemiology. She is experienced in multiple aspects of research in palliative care, cancer registries, and cooperative clinical trials and has additional experience as a registered massage therapist with national certification.

Kenneth Sancier, PhD
Dr. Sancier is the founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Qigong Institute. He is a Professor at the American College of Traditional Medicine, San Francisco. He received a PhD from Johns Hopkins University, and his research has focused on basic and applied chemistry. Dr. Sancier developed the computerized Qigong Research Database, has written multiple reviews of qigong scientific investigations, and has published numerous qigong clinical studies. He has participated in international qigong conferences in China, Japan, Canada, and the United States. He is an editor of the Journal of the International Society of Life Information Science (JISLIS), Director of the California Information Center of ISLIS, on the Advisory Board of the Journal Of Alternative Therapies, and is on the Council of the World Academic Society of Medical Qigong.

Elad Schiff, MD
Dr. Schiff received his Internal Medicine training at Bnai Zion Medical Center in Israel. He has served as Chairman of the Committee for Regulation of Complementary Medicine Studies, Ministries of Education and Health, Israel. He has published multiple articles in the areas of acupuncture and pain medicine, and is currently a residential Fellow at the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil. In addition to practicing internal medicine, he teaches in leading schools of Complementary Medicine in Israel, and is involved with a Complementary Medicine Clinic which provides reflexology, shiatsu, and acupuncture services.

Robb Scholten, MSLIS
Robb Scholten serves as the Information Officer at the Division for Research and Education on Complementary and Integrative Medical Therapies, Harvard Medical School. Prior to that, he worked as an academic representative at PaperChase, a pioneer organization in consumer-accessible database interfaces. He conducted his graduate work in Information Science at the University of Tennessee, where he helped design one of the first web-controlled online remote access database services in the State. Robb is also the secretary for the Division's three major continuing education courses which focus on integrative medical therapies.

David Shannahoff-Khalsa
David Shannahoff-Khalsa is the Director of The Research Group for Mind-Body Dynamics at the Institute for Nonlinear Science, University of California, San Diego. Prior to coming to UCSD in 1994, he spent 23 years at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, first working on the building blocks of the genetic code, followed by pioneering novel studies in the neurosciences on mind-body rhythms. His current research group is pioneering novel yogic clinical approaches for treating various psychiatric disorders, including obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post traumatic stress disorder, and attention deficit hyperactive disorder. He has also published novel yogic treatments for cardiovascular disorders and psycho-oncology patients. In addition, they are devising new methods for doing high resolution spatial-temporal analysis of whole-brain imaging using state-of-the-art 148 channel magnetoencephalography to investigate brain effects of yogic meditation techniques. He has also discovered new insights to mind-body rhythms during waking and sleep that gives new definition to psycho-physiological states based originally on concepts in yogic medicine. He has been funded by the National Institutes of Health to investigate the effects of Kundalini Yoga meditation techniques for the treatment of OCD. He has published widely in numerous scientific journals and presented at conferences nationally and internationally, and has been presenting at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Conference since 2003. In 2005 he did a Full Day 6-hour Course entitled “Kundalini Yoga Meditation Techniques for Psychiatric Disorders” and was invited to present a Full Day Course again in 2006. He was recently appointed to a Technical Expert Panel for a meta-analysis review of meditation for health conducted by the University of Alberta, and funded by the National Institutes of Health through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. He is currently writing a professional book for W.W. Norton & Co. entitled “Kundalini Yoga Meditation: Techniques Specific for Psychiatric Disorders, Couples Therapy, and Personal Growth” to be published in 2006.

Hari Sharma, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Sharma has a long and distinguished career in the field of medicine and medical research. He is Professor Emeritus and former Director of Cancer Prevention and Natural Products Research, The Ohio State University, College of Medicine and Public Health, Columbus, Ohio. He has published over 130 research papers, has authored over 200 abstracts and presentations, and has written four books. Dr. Sharma is a member of various national and international professional societies. He is also distinguished as a Fellow of the National Academy of Ayurveda, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Dr. Sharma has lectured worldwide at various medical institutions and conferences, and has presented research findings to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the World Health Organization (WHO). Since 1967, Dr. Sharma has published over 130 research studies and has also authored four books: 1) Freedom from Disease: How to Control Free Radicals, a Major Cause of Aging and Disease; 2) Contemporary Ayurveda; 3) Awakening Nature’s Healing Intelligence; and 4) The Answer to Cancer.

Amy Heck Sheehan, PharmD
Dr. Sheehan is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice with tenure at the Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She also serves as a Drug Information Specialist at Clarian Health Partners, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Sheehan received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Cincinnati and completed a specialized residency in drug information practice and pharmacotherapy at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Her primary responsibilities include didactic and experiential instruction within the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum at Purdue University and providing comprehensive, evidence-based drug information services in conjunction with the Clarian Health Partners Drug Information Service. Dr. Sheehan has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in the pharmacy literature and authored book chapters for therapeutics and drug information textbooks.

Charles A. Simpson, DC, DABCO
Dr. Simpson holds a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon. He is board certified by the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists and is a graduate of the Executive Leadership Program of America's Health Insurance Plans. He maintained a private practice for 25 years and currently is Vice President and Medical Director of the CHP Group, an organization of complementary medicine providers in the Pacific Northwest. He oversees all of CHP's medical affairs including credentialing, quality and utilization management. He is an invited lecturer at WSCC and has contributed to professional and trade publications as well as textbook chapters. He is a speaker on a variety of health care topics and policy issues. Dr. Simpson served on the Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners and is currently a member of the Site Team Academy of the Council on Chiropractic Education, the accrediting agency for chiropractic education in the US. He is a member of the American Chiropractic Association, the American College of Medical Quality and the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists.

Judith Smith, PharmD, FCCP, BCOP
Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, Division of Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (UT MDACC). In addition, Dr. Smith has faculty appointments at other local institutions including: an Adjunct Assistant Professor appointment in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at University of Texas College of Medicine- Houston; an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor appointment in the Department of Clinical Sciences and Administration at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, and is an Associate Faculty Member at the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences – Houston. Dr. Smith actively participates in research and teaching activities within each of these institutions. During the past three years, Dr. Smith has had the opportunity to participate in numerous institutional committees such as the CTRC Steering Committee, Prescribing Chemotherapy Task Force, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and CIMER Internal Advisory Committee Meeting. She is the Department of Gynecologic Medical Oncology Faculty Senator and has been a member of the Faculty Senate Research Affairs Committee this past year. Recently, Dr. Smith was also re-elected to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and began her second two-year term in June 2005. She also actively participates in departmental committees such as the Patient Care Committee established to address issues with the Gynecologic Oncology Center, and is the pharmacology representative on all three of the research working groups for ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancer.

Michael Smith, MRPharmS, ND
Dr. Smith serves as Associate Dean for Research at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. He is the author of numerous review articles and texts on the safety and uses of natural products, including "Herbs to Homeopathy" published by Prentice Hall Canada in 2002. He has served as Principal Investigator for multiple studies, including a prospective controlled study of Echinacea published in Archives of Internal Medicine (2000), studies of alternative therapies in cancer, and studies of alternative therapies in pregnancy. As a recognized authority in Canada, he serves on multiple national and international panels, including the National Advisory Group on Complementary and Alternative Medicine and HIV/AIDS, and the International Editorial Board for Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies (FACT).

Ivan Solà, Bs C
Dr. Solà has been involved in the Cochrane Collaboration since 2001, working in the Iberoamerican Cochrane Center as an author of systematic reviews, and training healthcare professionals in evidence-based medicine and systematic reviews methodology. Dr. Solà is also responsible for the documentary area of the Center, acting as the Trial Search Co-Ordinator, for both the IbCC, and the Cochrane Lung Cancer Review Group.

David Sollars, MAc, HMC
David Sollars holds a Master’s degree in Oriental Medicine from the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA). He is currently an adjunct professor of Biology at Merrimack College where he lectures on integrated approaches to sports medicine. He is a diplomat of the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists, NESA’s Chinese Herbal Medical Program, the North American Homeopathic Master’s Clinician Course, and the International Federation of Homeopathy. He is certified in Japanese Shiatsu, Sotai and Chinese Tui-Na massage. He has been practicing in the Boston area for over sixteen years, has authored books on acupuncture, fitness and homeopathy, and is a frequent lecturer and consultant for colleges, hospitals, insurance companies, and patient support groups.

Philippe Szapary, MD
Dr. Szapary is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He conducted his internship and residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Szapary is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania where he conducts clinical trials in Complementary and Alternative (CAM) therapies in cardiovascular disease. He is the principal investigator of a randomized clinical trial of gugulipid in hypercholesterolemia, and has participated in several industry-sponsored trials of plant stanol esters in hyperlipidemia. Dr. Szapary has also recently been awarded a career development award from the NIH to study the effects of Ayurvedic botanicals in atherosclerosis. He has authored several chapters in ambulatory medicine, evidence-based medicine and CAM therapies in cardiovascular disease. Dr. Szapary is also a regular contributor to the publication Alternative Medicine Alert.

Candy Tsourounis, PharmD
Dr. Tsourounis is the Acting Director of the Drug Information Analysis Service at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She also serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at UCSF. Dr. Tsourounis co-coordinates an evidence-based course in herbal remedies and dietary supplements, sponsored by the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. She has co-authored multiple book chapters on Herbs and Dietary Supplements in medical and pharmacy textbooks. Dr. Tsourounis serves as a clinical consultant and editor for several drug information publications and computer software programs, particularly in the areas of herbal remedies and dietary supplements. She has coordinated continuing education programs for national pharmacy societies on herbs and dietary supplements, and lectures nationally.

René Vega, MD
Dr. René Vega has over 16 years of experience in clinical and administrative medicine. As vice president of the Clinical Quality Management department at American Specialty Health, he oversees quality programs and clinical quality peer review committees. A diplomat and fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, Dr. Vega is currently an associate clinical professor at the UC San Diego Family Medicine Residency program. Dr. Vega is also the chair of the Healthyroads for Living Clinical Advisory Committee at American Specialty, which oversees the clinical quality of the botanicals and supplements offered by American Specialty Health. He was previously a network medical director for Aetna and Prudential HealthCare, both located in San Diego, CA. Dr. Vega has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Psychology from Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from Stanford Medical School, completed a pediatric internship at UC San Diego/Fresno Valley Medical Center and a family medicine residency program at UC San Diego.

Andrew Weil, MD
Andrew Weil is an internationally recognized expert on medicinal plants, alternative medicine, and the reform of medical education. Dr. Weil received his undergraduate degree in biology (botany) from Harvard University, MD from Harvard Medical School, and completed a medical internship at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco. In the 1970s, as a Fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs, Dr. Weil traveled widely in North and South America and Africa collecting information on drug use in other cultures, medicinal plants, and alternative methods of treating disease. He subsequently conducted research on medicinal and psychoactive plants at the Harvard Botanical Museum. Dr. Weil currently serves as Director of the Program in Integrative Medicine of the College of Medicine, University of Arizona, where he holds appointments as Clinical Professor of Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine. The Program in Integrative Medicine aims to change U.S. medical education by including information on alternative therapies, mind/body interactions, healing, and other subjects not currently emphasized in the training of physicians. Dr. Weil is the author of numerous scientific and popular articles, as well as seven books, including the international bestsellers Spontaneous Healing and Eight Weeks to Optimum Health. His most recent books include Eating Well for Optimum Health: The Essential Guide to Food, Diet, and Nutrition and The Healthy Kitchen: Recipes for a Better Body, Life, and Spirit (with Rosie Daley).

Wynn Werner
Wynn Werner is the Administrator of the Ayurvedic Institute. He is responsible to the Board of Directors for the general operation of the Institute and oversees all of its departments and facilities, assuring that the Institute fulfills its mission, purposes and goals. Wynn is a founding board member of NAMA (National Ayurvedic Medical Association) and teaches Level 1 and 2 sessions on ethics and legalities.

James Whedon, DC
Jim Whedon has 20 years of clinical experience and has led numerous healing intensive workshops. A member of the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research, he serves on the advisory board of several professional journals. Dr. Whedon was recently appointed an instructor at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. He developed a set of evidence-based recommendations for complementary medicine for prevention of common degenerative disorders, in conjunction with a health risk assessment tool. He has been certified in Network Spinal Analysis, and maintains a practice focused upon facilitating autonomic balance. He also administers the trauma registry at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. His research interests include the safety of chiropractic, autonomic balance, and integrative medicine for the care of post-traumatic problems. Dr. Whedon has conducted several multidisciplinary research projects in collaboration with Dartmouth Medical School faculty, and has published dozens of monographs on complementary medicine, as well as peer-reviewed papers. He recently applied for NIH funding for a five-year research project on chiropractic utilization and safety in older adults.

Roger Wood, LMT, Dipl. ABT (NCCAOM)
Roger Wood is a shiatsu practitioner. He received his training at the Boston Shiatsu School, and two years of advanced training in North Yorkshire, England. He is the founder and President of the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (MA), a professional organization for shiatsu and other Asian bodywork therapists. He is a Diplomate of the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. In addition to his clinical practice, he supervises students at the Boston Shiatsu School Student Clinic, and participates in NIH-sponsored research on low back-pain at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School.

Jay Woosaree, MAg, P Ag
Jay Woosaree is a plant breeder, agronomist and revegetation scientist and managed several projects related to Native Plant Development and Habitat Restoration at the Alberta Research Council. Jay also has been active in the natural health plant development area, looking at the agronomics of commercializing plants that can be of medicinal and health promoting or wellness value.

Steven H. Yale MD, FACP
Dr. Yale received his medical degree from Albany Medical College, and completed his Residency in Internal Medicine with a Fellowship in General Internal Medicine at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. Dr. Yale is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Staff physician at Marshfield Clinic where he also serves as Program Director of the General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program. He has received a number of awards for recognition of his excellence in teaching and education and is the Associate Editor of Clinical Medicine & Research a NLM indexed journal. He is the Director of Clinical Research, Goldbach Endowed Chair, at Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation where he conducts and maintains oversight of clinical research trials. His research interest include Echincea and phytopharmaceutical drug metabolism.

Youko Yeracaris, MD
Dr. Yeracaris was practicing medicine as a Board Certified Family Physician when she embraced her longstanding interest in holistic medicine. She became certified in medical acupuncture, chronic pain, and substance abuse through UCLA in 1995. She also became certified in homeopathy, chelation therapy, and has trained extensively in biomedical functional medicine as well as the treatment of various pediatric and adult behavioral disorders. Her areas of special interest include women’s health issues such as menopause and peri-menopause, PMS, infertility, and fibroids with a focus on herbal, nutrition and naturopathic treatment modalities. She has extensive experience in chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and other myofascial pain syndromes, insomnia, gastro-intestinal disturbances such as IBS and GERD, chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. She is also experienced in wholistic treatment approaches to autism, ADD/ADHD and associated behavioral disorders using biomedical functional modalities. She embraces an integrative and holistic approach with self-empowerment of the individual in healing the body, mind, and spirit.

Mario M. Zeolla, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Zeolla graduated with his BS degree from Albany College of Pharmacy in 1997. He received his post-BS PharmD degree from Albany College of Pharmacy in 1999. Following graduation he completed an APhA-ASHP accredited residency in Community Pharmacy Practice at the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy. Dr. Zeolla serves as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Albany College of Pharmacy, and has a community pharmacy practice site with Eckerd pharmacy in Loudonville, NY. His activities with Eckerd include the development, marketing and implementation of a variety of pharmaceutical care services at the Eckerd Patient CARE Center. The Patient CARE Center also serves as a clinical clerkship training site for Pharm.D. students from the college. Dr. Zeolla is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist. His academic and scholarly areas of interest include dietary supplements and alternative therapies, oral anticoagulation therapy and clinical community pharmacy development. He has collaborated on a number of community pharmacy practice-based research projects. He has co-authored the Venous Thromboembolism chapter of the textbook Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach. He serves as the section advisor for the Alternative Medicine Corner of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Drug Information Line newsletter, and has presented numerous continuing education programs on the topic of dietary supplements. He is an active member of several pharmacy organizations including the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Pharmacists Association.

Robert Zori, MD
Dr. Zori is an Associate Professor, Chief of the Division of Genetics, and Director of Cytogenetics, Department of Pediatrics, University of Florida. He is a graduate of Odense University Medical School in Denmark and the Baystate Medical Center Residency Program in Massachusetts. He has practiced medicine in both Denmark and the United States.
